What To Take To The Hospital
>In general you won't want to take much to the hospital because you just have to lug it all back home! Plus many hospitals provide the essentials. But here are some things you might consider. (Feel free to add to this list by editing this page.)
- Leave ALL your valuables at home.
- Leave all medications at home unless specifically asked to bring it, then make sure it's well marked with your name and dosage information.
- Do bring a list of all your medications.
- Bring a photo I.D., most hospitals ask for them now. Have a loved one take it home later.
- You will also need your insurance information.
- Bring loose fitting clothing to wear home. Keep in mind where your incision will be so you can avoid rubbing and irritating it with tight clothing.
- Comfortable pajamas, robe and sturdy slippers if you like. Initially you will probably want to stay in the hospital gown due to IV lines, drainage tubes, urinary catheters and the like.
- Toothbrush, small tube of toothpaste, comb, brush, denture cup, eyeglass case, shaving kit, etc.
- Lip Balm is another thing, hospitals are very dry places.
- Small amount of money if you think you might want something from the vending machines or gift shop.
- Magazine, book, puzzle books or other such things.
- If you have a cane or a walker at home ask your doctor or physical therapist if you should have someone bring them in post-op to avoid getting charged for something you already have.
